Brothers and Sisters,

I know everyone has been very busy this August (I thought summer was supposed to be a slower season?) But, I wanted to urge you to come out  – and bring others – to two very important events this week!

WEDNESDAY
As you may have heard, last week, over 90% of UFCW members voted against the latest offer from Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons, which would devastate their health benefits. While we continue to hope the final negotiations will produce a fair contract, we need to show these Fortune 500 companies the strong support for the 62,000 grocery workers in Southern California as they prepare to strike. They only respond to pressure – so let’s give it to them!

Please join us for a rally and leafleting on Wednesday, August 24 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the downtown Ralphs store, 101 G Street, San Diego, CA 92101.

SATURDAY
As many of you know, for months we have been working with community allies and unions to create an economic platform that we can take as ours into 2012. We need to reclaim the message! Our folks don’t care about debt ceilings and we know our City trash truck drivers DID NOT cause the pension underfunding.  What do we care about? Ensuring the banks are held responsible and stop foreclosing our houses, that everyone has access to public education and other public services, that we get back to work and that we protect the safety net, including social security, and that we support collective bargaining and UNIONS! Come be a part  of history! Learn about the economic issues facing San Diegans and what we can do about it. The day will feature small breakout sessions on several issues, including Empowering the Unorganized, Labor and the Middle Class, Tax Fairness, and many more.  Along with dozens of community groups and allies, we will lay out our vision for a Better San Diego

Please join the Labor Council and the Coalition for a Better San Diego at the Community Economic Summit.
Saturday, August 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
at
Horace Mann Middle School
4345 54th Street, San Diego 92115

Please encourage leadership, staff, members and activists to attend. Click here for flyer. RSVP at www.abettersandiego.org or call (619) 228-8101 x4.

I hope to see you all a few times this week!

In solidarity,
Lorena
