What is TSI?
The Summer Institute (TSI) is a four-day series of interactive workshops designed to foster dynamic learning environments and innovative pedagogical practices. Each workshop session is presented by a team of AFT colleagues, generally from different disciplines and campuses. Built into each session is the Time + Space to Innovate creative ideas tailored to your individual classes, needs, interests, and style. As part of a supportive environment of presenters and colleagues, you’ll be off to a strong start for your fall classes before summer even begins!
Meet the TSI 2025 Coordinators!
Kelly Metz-Matthews, PhD
English as a Second Language
San Diego College of Continuing Education
Kelly is faculty and Assistant Program Chair in the English as a Second Language Program at the San Diego College of Continuing Education as well as Associate Editor of Applied Linguistics, an Oxford University Press journal. She’s mildly obsessed with language, and she frequently publishes and presents on participatory and collaborative writing pedagogies. She is a proud alum of the U.S. Department of State’s English Language Fellow Program (Russia, 2021) and English Language Specialist Program (Pakistan, 2023; Indonesia, 2024). Kelly lives in La Mesa with her family and furry friends in an eclectic little library masquerading as a house.
Jennifer Boots, M.A.
English Language Acquisition & English
San Diego City College
Jen has been teaching ELAC and English at San Diego City College since 2006 and is currently the department chair for ELAC. She is working on her doctorate in English Pedagogy with a specialization in language. Jen is co-creator of TSI and has been a part of the coordination team since it began in 2018, except in 2024 when she was on a much needed, much appreciated sabbatical. She loves traveling to hot springs with her son in their beloved RV, Giovanni, and eating at delicious restaurants since cooking well is not a skill she has acquired… yet.
