Take Action-Save our Pensions!

This week we are again calling on you to take action to save our pensions!

This week’s message is again regarding the Governor’s attempt to eviscerate our pensions.   Unlike the weak arguments made in favor of privatizing Social Security, neither PERS nor STRS is in financial trouble, nor are either of them anticipated to encounter any financial difficulty in the future.

The Governor’s attempt at privatizing these pension plans is nothing more than a way to funnel more money into the hands of his corporate backers and to weaken the voice of public sector workers.

Your past pressure on the Governor’s office has resulted in positive gains for us.  We need to keep making our voices heard if we are to protect our retirement programs.

Please do BOTH of the following, EACH workday for this entire week:

1)  Please call the Governor’s office in San Diego at 619-525-4641.
Tell them:  “I’m calling in opposition to the Governor’s plan to privatize the PERS and STRS pension funds.”

(Note from Mahler:  When I asked the man answering the phone how privatizing PERS would save the state money, his response was “I don’t know.”)

2)  Please print out, sign and mail or fax (619-525-4640) the attached letter to Governor Schwarzenegger insisting that he respect our right to a dignified retirement.

That’s all it takes!

Please forward these emails to all of your friends, neighbors, family members-anyone with a phone will do!  It is essential that we spread the word as broadly as possible outside of our immediate education community.  The Governor needs to feel as though all of the general public, not just us “special interests” think his proposals are the wrong solution for California.  Next week we will send out another message for you to act on.

(Please do NOT reply to this email.  Please send email responses to aftjim@pacbell.net.)
