Silence is NOT an Option

March 2026

Women’s History Month

March 7th – Anniversary of Bloody Sunday (Selma, 1965)

Abolition & Mass Incarceration Awareness

Claudette Colvin1) Women’s History Month- Let’s kick off Women’s History Month by acknowledging and learning more about Claudette Colvin. At age 15, she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus (9 months before Rosa Parks). Her case was a part of Browder v. Gayle, which ended bus segregations.

2) Bloody Sunday (Selma, 1965)- On March 7, 1965, six hundred peaceful civil rights marchers who were walking towards Montgomery, Alabama to demand federal protection of Black voting rights, were violently beaten with batons, tear gassed, and trampled on by Alabama state troopers and local law enforcement. Their story is still relevant today because in our times, it’s easier for a white person to vote from space than it is for Black people to vote in their communities.

3) Mass Incarceration Awareness- Our criminal legal system (not “justice” system) not only rips apart the dignity of Black men, but also negatively impacts their communities by taking fathers away from their families as well as contribute to the increase in mental health issues.
