Scholarship Opportunities for Union Families

Dear Colleagues,
There are still several union scholarship opportunities available for you and your family members, but deadlines are fast approaching!

Here is what one of our members had to say about last year’s program:

My son, Chase Morrin, is the recipient of the highest level scholarship from Union Plus (representing AFT) for the 2012-2013 academic school year (out of a pool of 6,000 applicants nationwide). Both Union Plus and AFT sent him really nice congratulatory letters. The students fill out applications and write an essay on what the union means and/or has done for them. Chase’s scholarship will be used for his sophomore year at Harvard. His letter of recommendation was written by Ken Ard (adjunct piano faculty at Grossmont College).

The 2013-2014 application is available and due January 31.

I hope other AFT members will apply. I am going to encourage Chase to apply for another union sponsored scholarship to help his junior year, 2013-2014.

The John Lyons Memorial Foundation in conjunction with San Diego’s Labor Education Fund is proud to announce the 3rd Annual Scholarship for children of Union Members. The $5,500 award is to help high school seniors continue their education. Funding will be awarded over a four year period to students who continue to meet scholarship standards. Award selection is based on academic achievement, special talents and skills, participation in extracurricular activities, community service, financial need, and a 500-word essay on a social issue of the applicant’s choice.
