Dear Colleagues,
Senate Bill 173 (Liu) limits the courses that adult learners may take and restricts local community college districts’ ability to offer noncredit classes. In addition, it moves both K-12 adult education and community college noncredit courses to a new model of performance-based funding. This is the wrong direction to take the state, especially since the Budget Act of 2014 set in place a stronger, regional-based strategy for adult education.
SB 173 will be heard in committee next week
PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW!
Please contact the Assembly Higher Education Committee members listed below and urge them to OPPOSE SB 173. All you need to say is “I am calling to urge Assembly Member ___ to vote NO on SB 173. This bill all but eliminates access to community college courses for parents and older adults.”
