Reversing the Downward Spiral of Public Higher Education

Please join American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and American Association of University Professors President Irene Mulvey, along with union members and student activists from West Virginia University and the University of Wisconsin System, for a conversation on funding crises across higher education that have led to significant cuts to programs and curriculum. West Virginia University’s shocking elimination of 143 faculty jobs and 28 majors, including nearly all language courses, is the latest example of how these crises are affecting higher education. And at a time when the state has a surplus in the billions, the Wisconsin Legislature is withholding funding to the UW System until the universities cut diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. In response, UW Oshkosh has announced that it plans to cut 200 staff positions.

This webinar will be held at 3:30 PM ET on OCTOBER 10, 2023.

The panel will discuss to what degree these crises are manufactured; how they affect students, employees and the communities these institutions serve; and what local activists are doing to fight back.

These cuts leave serious holes in the fabric of local communities and threaten to increase the disparities between metro areas and rural economies. Colleges and universities are anchors of regional economies that deserve investment, with one Brookings Institution report projecting that a nationwide $50 million investment in regional institutions “could generate between $2.9 million and $12.4 million in federal income tax collections, and between $1.1 million and $4.7 million in state income tax collections.”
Our collective well-being relies on a high-quality system of higher education that fosters the creation of knowledge, such as new public health advances and new ways of understanding the world. Reversing these trends will take all of us working together to share our values with the public. Join us to learn more.
