Hello San Diego and Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community Colleges Classified Professionals and Faculty!

Please join us for the Global Climate Strike on Friday, September 24th at 1:00 in Waterfront Park (1600 Pacific Hwy, San Diego, CA  92101)

This is a salient time for environmental justice. Just a few weeks ago the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued its sixth assessment report that UN Secretary General António Guterres called a “code red for humanity.”  If emissions do not fall in the next couple of decades, then 3ºC of heating looks likely – a catastrophe. And if they don’t fall at all, the report says, then we are on track for 4ºC to 5ºC, which is apocalypse territory: extreme heat, catastrophic fires, flooding, and storms, pandemics, diminished food supplies, and mass extinction.  If there is any good news in this report it is that there is still time to avert the worst outcomes IF we begin to take bold and dramatic action to get off fossil fuels and reduce emissions NOW.  Thus, the time is upon us to demand swift action.

Fortunately, at present, the THRIVE Act presents a transformational economic recovery package that projects cutting climate pollution in half by 2030 and provides over 15.5 million Americans with family-sustaining, union jobs.

To help promote this outcome, you are invited to join us in solidarity on the Global Day of Climate Action to urge local and state representatives to support THRIVE and address our demands on the local, state, and national levels.

What are our goals?

Local: A Zero-Carbon regional plan by 2030 in San Diego City and County.

State: Stop issuing new oil drilling and fracking permits, implement 2,500 ft. setbacks between oil sites and communities, and work to phase out existing oil.

National: San Diego and CA Representatives co-sponsor the THRIVE agenda and work to address environmental justice issues through an equitable plan.

Please join us and students and their allies from the community for the Global Climate Strike on Friday, September 24th at 1:00 pm. Participants are invited to come together by the waterfront at the San Diego County Administration Building and march towards San Diego City Hall. As faculty and staff of the San Diego and Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College Districts, we urge you to extend this invitation to your students and colleagues!

Bring what you may need, such as a mask, water, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes, and invite your family and friends!  All participants are strongly encouraged to wear masks and practice proper physical distancing.

In Solidarity,

Abigail, Adrienne, Aireth, Aleksandra, Alyssa, Ana Isabel, Ariana, Catherine, Evie, Hana, Hannah, Lizeth, Michelle, Nhu-Quynh, Paul, Peter
