- Today is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, Tenn. AFT officers and members from all over the country are marking the occasion at AFSCME’s I Am conference, working with other union activists to carry King’s work forward. “We must use this moment to rise again for jobs and justice,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. “Just like Martin Luther King Jr. said, our tool is our vote. Our mission is the 2018 elections.”
