Dear CFT Leaders,
There will be a more detailed email later today but I wanted to get this information to you first thing this morning.
First of all, if you called in to the Governor’s call last night I was as surprised as you that it was only 4 minutes and it was just a summary of his announcement just a few hours before. But I got a call later that night from the his office that let me know what the point was. So here was the point.
The Governor announced a statewide stay-at-home order (aka shelter-in-place). However, individuals can continue to go to the grocery store, get food at drive-thrus/take out, “go for a walk or walk their dogs” practicing social distancing, and continue to go to work that require essential functions. The call was meant for labor leaders to understand the roles of those essential functions which includes the child care services, meal providing services, and educational services that have been set up at our educational facilities (as well as grocery store workers, health care workers, emergency responders, food prep workers, etc).
Basically, the services that we negotiated with our employers to continue to perform, may still be performed under this order. They wanted to make sure labor leaders knew that.
So, while last night’s call was not very effective, his intent to include unions in not only getting the word out but also in making some of the decisions is a positive act during this state of emergency.
Again, I wanted to get this out to you first thing this morning so that you and your members knew that the Governor’s order did not change any work that may have been set up at your schools or colleges. There will be another email later today with more information, including an all leader call next Tuesday.

If you cannot make this call or didn’t see this email in time, don’t worry, we will gather the information and push this out soon.
And just to remind you all, these are safety measures. As the button sitting on my desk says, “Keep Calm and Union Strong”.
