Honoring Jim Mahler at ICWJ’s Voices for Justice Fiesta de Quinceañera!

As you can see, the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice is honoring our own Jim Mahler at their 15th Anniversary Voices for Justice gala on December 4th from 5:30-8:30.  This organization is amazing—it helps our community’s most vulnerable people give voice to their experiences and to stand up for themselves—and I am proud to serve as a Board Member.  Our AFT has been a long-standing supporter of ICWJ’s work, and now they are recognizing Jim’s work on behalf of our students at their Quinceanera.  It’s a wonderful honor.  AFT will have some seats available at our tables, but please also consider donating to ICWJ so that they can continue doing the important work they do for our community.  In the invitation below, there is a link.  Please let me know if you have any questions!

Best,

Featured Honoree: Jim Mahler
President, American Federation of Honorees Guild Local 1931
Visionary in Public Education
Article ImageJim Mahler has been a longtime champion for teachers and workers rights. After obtaining his Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science, both from UC Berkeley, he began his career as a Professor of Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics in the San Diego Community College District. Jim started as an Active Officer of American Federation of Teachers, Local 1931 in 1987 with increasing involvement.
Since becoming President and Chief Negotiator of the American Federation of Teachers, Local 1931 in 1996, he has been a tireless fighter for decent working conditions and preserving the gains of the labor movement in the face of withering assaults to roll them back. In particular, he has directed political campaigns which replaced incumbent Community College Board, School Board, and Board of Education Members with Pro-Education, Pro-Worker Candidates gaining 35 successful wins in a row.
Jim is also a member of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council Executive Board, and now is the President of the Community College Council, California Federation of Teachers after 10 years as Statewide Vice-President. Jim serves as an inspiration for all of us to speak truth to power and continue the struggle for worker justice.
