Ending the Black Women Wage Gap in California

California Budget and Policy Center

Women in California deserve the opportunity to thrive. But for too many Black women — especially Black single mothers — structural barriers stand in the way of achieving economic security.

Disrupting Disparities

In collaboration with the California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute, our latest report highlights these disparities and calls for action to close the wage gap for Black women.
Black women in California are paid significantly less than white men, white women, and Asian women. If progress continues at the current rate, the wage gap won’t close until 2121 — nearly 100 years from now.

For Black single mothers, this gap is even more devastating. If paid equally to white men in 2022, a Black single mother could have afforded an additional eight years of groceries, a full year of rent, and two years of child care.

When Black women are paid fairly, they lift up their families, their communities, and all of California. State leaders must take bold action to remove these barriers and ensure every woman has the resources and pay she deserves.
