As you may have already heard, our fellow teachers in AFT Local 1 in Chicago just settled one of the most important labor struggles in recent memory. The following piece by AFT political action VP Jim Miller outlines the broader significance of the Chicago teachers strike and how it speaks to the larger issue of corporate education reform embraced by elements of both political parties across the country. As the threatened closure of the San Francisco Community College District in California by out of control accreditation officials illustrates, the pressure to adopt politically popular but educationally suspect reforms is at our own doorstep as well.
