ACTION ALERT!Call your Legislators and Governor Brown:  Stop this Public Employee Pension Reform

Is making five phone calls today worth the time to save your retirement?

This is the final week of the Legislative session and all business must be concluded by Friday.  The Governor and Legislative leadership are about to reveal the public pension reform proposals under consideration for the past year and a half in the form of legislation this week.  Although full details are not available at this time, the deal will almost certainly involve significant rollbacks of current public employee retirement benefit levels.

Among the likely negative changes affecting current and future CFT members will be:

  • Increase in employee retirement ages for normal and maximum benefits
  • Increased employee contributions to STRS and PERS
  • Three year average for determining final compensation (currently one year)
  • More restrictive post-retirement employment limits
  • Two-tier retirement benefits for current and future members.

This reform comes after several years of layoffs, low or no pay increases, furloughs, shortened school years, and increased employee costs for health care.  While CFT agrees with curbing pension abuse such as “spiking” by highly-compensated public administrators, there is nothing here for the rest of us but cuts and takeaways.

CFT leadership urges you to call the Governor, Assembly Speaker Perez, and Senate Pro Tem Steinberg and tell them that scapegoating hardworking public employees for the Wall Street-driven financial crisis that led to pension fund shortfalls is not acceptable.  Go back and negotiate something more fair.

Governor:  916-445-2841
Assembly Speaker Perez:  916-319-2046
Senate Pro Tem Steinberg:  916-651-4006

CFT leadership also urges you to call your legislators and tell them to vote NO on this package of reforms.  Click here to obtain the phone number of your legislators.

Whatever the outcome of this current pension proposal, the CFT will work with labor and community partners on a long term strategy to address adequate state funding, the vital role of government and public sector workers, and the need for all workers to have a decent retirement.
