What your AFT Guild, Local 1931 is doing to support the Wisconsin workers and the 14 courageous Democratic Senators who have prevented the stripping of collective bargaining rights for public sector employees:
1) We wrote to each of the 14 Democratic Senators (click for sample letter) inviting them to come to San Diego as a “safe haven” from the tyranny in Wisconsin. We are offering to pay their airfare, and take care of food and lodging costs by opening up our members’ homes to them. We will also provide them with any needed office/logistical support.
2) We are trying to get the San Diego City Council to pass a resolution declaring San Diego a “Safe City” for the 14 Democrats.
3) We are also asking the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice to get their member affiliates to pledge their places of worship as “Safe Sanctuaries” for the Senators.
4) We will be sending out press releases locally and nationally on all of the above.
What can you do to help?
You can open your home to one of the Senators. AFT will remiburse you for any added expenses you incur while your “guest” is in your home. Click here to submit your name as an AFT volunteer “host.”
Thanks in advance for your help with this solidarity effort with our brothers and sisters in Wisconsin!
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
In Union Solidarity,
Jim Mahler, President
