AFT Monday Message – 4/19/10

Monday Morning Briefings…

1) March for California’s Future Coming to a Close!
The 48 day, 400 mile trek which has become the March for California’s Future will come to an end this Wednesday, April 21st when the marchers and their supporters descend on the Capitol. Dozens of SDCCD and GCCCD faculty, staff, and students will be joining up with the marchers for their final leg and a rally on the steps of the Capitol. AFT national President Randi Weingarten will also be joining the march and speaking at the Capitol rally.

* Read AFT Guild core marcher Jim Miller’s Case for the March, in the Huffington Post, and his blog Marching for Justice is an Existential Experience.

2) Over 900 Majority Vote Initiative Petitions Collected!
Many thanks to all of you who collected signatures to help qualify the Majority Vote Initiative for the November 2010 ballot! This initiative will reduce the 2/3 vote requirement to a simple majority vote to pass the state budget.

In our ongoing Statewide advocacy efforts to ensure your working conditions are protected, we now turn our focus to the passage of AB 656. If passed, this bill would impose a severance tax on oil and gas extraction in California, with the revenues being fully dedicated to higher education. California is the only major oil producing state in the US without this tax. If passed, this bill would funnel over $1.1 billion into Higher Education. Stay tuned for more details on our efforts to ensure passage of this critical bill.

3) Term Life Insurance for Members
New AFT members who are actively employed are entitled to $12,000 of term life insurance coverage by MetLife for a period of one year at absolutely no cost. An additional benefit of $12,000 will be paid in the event of an accidental death.

All members are eligible for voluntary term life insurance, designed to provide financial protection in the event of death or an accident leading to the loss of a limb, hearing, speech or sight, or paralysis of the arms or legs. Voluntary term life coverage is available in amounts from one to six times annual base earnings, up to a maximum of $1 million. Available for members, spouses/domestic partners and dependent children.

Call 1-888-423-8700 for details on both programs.
