Action Needed- Equalization Cut by Assembly Committee

Colleagues,

We have run into another obstacle regarding equalization funding.  The Assembly Budget Subcommittee voted to reduce equalization funding back to $80 million instead of the $160 million which was previously agreed to.  This would have large consequences for all of the underfunded community college districts, including ours.  Our District would nearly $4 million dollars of annual funding if this reduction takes place.

Some at the state level are suggesting that equalization funds are needed to reduce student fees. This is totally incorrect and is just a political ploy. The two items do not need to be connected at all. It is not an either/or situation. There are plenty of other funds to address student fee issues.

You can help by faxing a letter yourself or calling our Assembly representatives with the same message:  we must fund equalization fully and not trade this for any other purpose.

SoŠwe need to take action right away. Please fax (that is the most important thing to do) letters to the below listed Assembly members letting them know that equalization funds are urgently needed and must not be reduced. Calls and hard copy letters mailed to them will also be helpful.

A sample letter is attached.  This painless process will only take a few minutes of your time.  San Diego Assembly Member Fax and telephone numbers are listed below.

Thank you in advance for your help with this important issue!
