Two San Diego History Events: The Release of Under the Perfect Sun and Beyond the Theme Park

Dear Colleagues,

May is Labor History Month and AFT is going local. We are pleased to announce that the updated 20th anniversary edition of Under the Perfect Sun: The San Diego Tourists Never See published by Seven Stories Press and the accompanying oral history project sponsored by the UCSD Labor Center, the Center on Policy Initiatives, and AFT Guild Local 1931, Beyond the Theme Park: Struggle and Solidarity Under the San Diego Sun, by AFT’s Jim Miller and Kelly Mayhew. There are two scheduled events to celebrate their release! Both books explore San Diego’s labor, political, and activist history. Under the Perfect Sun was co-authored by the late, prominent urban historian, Mike Davis.

The first event is the launch for the publication of the updated 20th anniversary edition of Under the Perfect Sun (with a new preface, coda, and an additional section of interviews) on
Thursday, May 21st at 7pm at The Book Catapult in South Park (3010-B Juniper Street)—see the attached flyer.

The second event, sponsored by the UCSD Labor Center, the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, and the Center on Policy Initiatives, is a celebration of the publication of both books and the last twenty years of local activism with a brief reading and talk by the authors and then a panel discussion with the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council President Brigette Browning and the Center on Policy Initiative’s Executive Director Kyra Greene. The authors and panelists will discuss how San Diego’s past labor and activist history informs its future. This event will take place on Thursday, June 4th at 6pm at the UCSD Park & Market in downtown San Diego. There will be food and community and free copies of both books while supplies last. All are welcome.

We hope you can come to one or both events!

In Solidarity,
Kelly Mayhew and Jim Miller
