examines the impact these institutions have had on American history, culture, and national identity.  2017

Those Winter Days:  “”Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, featuring Vice President Joe Biden, Elizabeth Alexander, Angela Duckworth, and a chorus of working fathers and sons…Hayden was black but most students read the poem without that context. He grew up in a poor black neighborhood in Detroit during the Great Depression. 2017

Through a lens darkly:  The first documentary to explore the American family photo album through the eyes of black photographers, Through a Lens Darkly probes the recesses of American history to discover images that have been suppressed, forgotten and lost. From slavery to the present, these extraordinary images unveil a world confronting the difficult edges of citizenship and what it means to be human.  2015 

The Sound of New York: Greg Osby: “Greg Osby is an American saxophonist known for his very personal playing style and compositions. Explore Greg Osby’s musical world in New York City.”  2018                                  

African-American Heroes (a segment from the film American Rebels) “In 1969, Falcon debuted as Marvel’s first African-American superhero and Captain America’s partner. His creation allowed Marvel to write and comment about the Civil Rights Movement in America.”  Other segments include “Black Panther” and “Growing Diversity in Comics”. 2017

TEDTalks: Kimberlé Crenshaw: The Urgency of Intersectionality

“Now more than ever, it’s important to look boldly at the reality of race and gender bias — and understand how the two can combine to create even more harm. Kimberlé Crenshaw uses the term “intersectionality” to describe this phenomenon; as she says, if you’re standing in the path of multiple forms of exclusion, you’re likely to get hit by both. In this moving talk, she calls on us to bear witness to this reality and speak up for victims of prejudice.”  2016

The Tuskegee Airmen “tells the dramatic, true story of the first African-American fighter pilots, the Red Tails.” 2015

America’s Great Divide: From Obama to Trump: segments include but are not limited to Trayvon Martin;  Birther Movement; Ferguson shooting; Congressional Divide; Emanuel AME Church shooting. 2020

Admitting African American Women (segment from the film The Vote.)  Ida Wells-Barnett formed the Alpha Suffrage Club. She decided to march in the parade and advocated for racial justice. Paul concluded that African Americans would not be excluded, but also not encouraged. 2020

African-American Mosque in Memphis (segment from the film America’s First Muslims) “Colima explains the history of the Nation of Islam; trace the history of African American‘s in the faith from the days of Muhammad. Imam Mahaj reflects on sex and violence”.

First African American Astronaut Candidate (segment in the film A Place beyond the sky) “Ed Dwight discusses his invitation to test pilot school, en-route to astronaut training, NASA’s southern support, and his successful completion of the program.”
