AFT Election Results

Dear Colleagues,
While things certainly did not turn out the way we had wanted nationwide, locally and statewide our endorsed candidates did quite well.

In our #1 targeted statewide race, Tom Torlakson was re-elected as Superintendent of Public Instruction with 52% of the vote ahead of his heavily funded corporate “ed-reform” opponent.

In the San Diego Community College District, incumbent Trustees Maria Senour and Peter Zschiesche easily won re-election receiving 68% and 64% of the vote respectively.

Miramar College counselor Rick Cassar won election to an open seat on the Mira Costa Community College District Board of Trustees, defeating his multi-millionaire opponent by a margin of 59-41%.

Unfortunately, Miramar College professor Adrian Arancibia narrowly missed securing a seat on the Sweetwater Union High School District Board, falling short by just 466 votes.

All in all, considering the record low turnout and the national trend in the other direction, we did quite well in the island of California.

Thanks to all of you who helped secure these victories and especially to all of you who voted! For those of you who didn’t vote, we know who you are… J
