The CFT-led march through the Central Valley, which kicks off this Friday, March 5th, and arrives in Sacramento on April 21, is gaining partners and drawing volunteer marchers. The march will highlight three themes: Restore the promise of public education; A government and economy that work for all Californians; and Fair taxes to fund California's future. Most people will walk segments. A few will walk the entire journey. AFT Guild Political Action VP Jim Miller is one of these. He was recently profiled on KPBS radio. Click here to listen to the radio story, and to learn more about the march. Our bus ride from San Diego->LA->Bakersfield->San Diego on the 5th is SOLD OUT! (details for the 165 bus riders who have already signed up will be sent to them tomorrow)
March 4 is shaping up to be a watershed event. Educators across the spectrum from early childhood education and K-12 through adult education, community college, CSU, and UC will leaflet, demonstrate, and educate the public about the impact of years of state budget cuts. We will not stop there. We will also call for the Legislature and governor to get some backbone for the logical and reasonable alternative: return to fair taxes on the rich and corporations to fund education and other necessary social services. On the college campuses especially, students will be participating in, and in some cases leading, the actions. Virtually every college and continuing education site in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca and San Diego Community College Districts will be holding events. Check your campus email for more details on events at your specific site, then join the student led rally and march to the Governor's office beginning at 3:00pm in Balboa Park at the Centro Cultural de la Raza, near the corner of Park Blvd. and Presidents Way.
Our statewide advocacy work is not done on March 5th. CFT is working in a coalition with other public sector unions to put the Majority Budget Act on the November 2010 ballot. This ballot measure would reduce the undemocratic 2/3 supermajority currently required to pass a state budget in the Legislature to a simple majority.
